My Story
I’ve always been drawn to the stories where everything’s on the line. The ones where the world is dark, the odds are bad, and the people standing in the fire still choose to fight. That’s the kind of story I try to write—whether it’s a burned-out warrior in a crumbling empire, a space-faring misfit crew on the run, or a broken hero trying to hold back the end of everything.
My name’s D.W. Hawkins. I’m a combat veteran, a lifelong lover of fantasy, and someone who’s seen both the beauty and the brutality of the world up close. I served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a lot of that experience—what it taught me about fear, loyalty, pain, and perseverance—shows up in my stories. I don’t write clean, comfortable worlds. I write the kind of places where hope still matters precisely because everything is falling apart.
I started publishing in 2011 with The Sentient Fire, which eventually evolved into the Seven Signs series. I’ve written epic fantasy, novellas, space opera—you name it—but what ties it all together is a commitment to telling stories that don’t flinch. Stories with stakes, with scars, with people you can believe in, even when they’re making all the wrong choices for the right reasons.
